There’s no doubt Old Town Alexandria has a lot going for it. One of Virginia’s top getaway destinations, this historic corner of the “Old Dominion” is home to countless well-preserved colonial-era buildings and old cobblestone streets just waiting to be wandered. And it also just so happens to be where you’ll find some of the best hotels in Alexandria.

Set adjacent to the Potomac River and just a short drive from Washington, DC, this sprawling historic district traces its roots all the way back to the 18th century, a period of time that’s reflected in its charming row houses, its old churches and commercial buildings, as well as its lovely waterfront.

Its setting in the heart of Old Town makes The Alexandrian the perfect base from which to explore. Just steps away from Market Square, I had the good fortune to stay here recently and appreciated the fact I was able to park and forget about the car for much of my stay (until, that is, I ventured out to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate… but that’s a story for another day). Located on King Street, a more than mile-long stretch of dining, boutique shops, and attractions, this 4-star hotel blends modern design with historical touches in its 241 rooms and 11 suites.

Stylish accents complement practical amenities, including a 24-hour fitness center and complimentary bike rentals for exploring the nearby waterfront. On-site, King & Rye serves comforting Southern fare and whiskey offerings that were so tasty that I confess I dined there twice during my three-day stay. And topping it all were the complimentary evening cocktails served in the hotel lobby, the perfect aperitif before dinner.

Other onsite facilities include over 9,000 sq ft of event space, supported by professional staff who can coordinate meetings or private functions. Pet owners will appreciate the hotel’s pet-friendly policy, though there’s an additional fee for furry companions. For those traveling by car, self-parking is available on-site. It’s a convenient choice for guests wanting easy access to the heart of Old Town without sacrificing modern comforts.

Located in Old Town North, the 4-star Hotel AKA Alexandria is one of the newer (but not the newest) hotels in Alexandria. Opened in spring 2023 and featuring Piero Lissoni’s vision of sleek minimalism and mid-century inspiration, I recommend you opt for one of the hotel’s Zen Suites which feature upscale furnishings and a cool residential vibe. The property also boasts amenities such as a private cinema and a large terrace, g unique spaces to relax or entertain… or be entertained.

With 14,000 sq ft of flexible meeting and event space, including a naturally lit boardroom with its own outdoor patio, Hotel AKA Alexandria is a great choice for leisure or business. For dining, you’ll find two options on-site A.Lounge+Bar for cocktails and lighter bites, and A.Cafe+Bakery for pastries and casual meals. Its location affords a balance between quiet neighborhood charm and proximity to the lively King Street area, making it a solid choice for those seeking contemporary flair within historic surroundings.

Debuting in July 2024, Hotel Heron merges a 1926 landmark, the former George Mason Hotel, with a modern addition. This design approach preserved the property’s vintage character while introducing updated lodging and event spaces. The property features 134 rooms, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center, and communal areas suited for co-working or casual meetups.

Dining and nightlife options include the ground-floor KILN for Mid-Atlantic cuisine prepared with hearth-focused techniques, Francis Hall for craft cocktails in a cozy setting, and Good Fortune, a seasonal rooftop bar delivering panoramic views of the Potomac River. This stunning combination of old and new architecture is located close to Alexandria’s waterfront, just a short stroll from the bustling boat docks and nearby shops.

Archer hotels are always a good choice for those who enjoy luxury travel. And the Archer Hotel Old Town Alexandria is no exception. Formerly known as the Lorien Hotel & Spa, this prime piece of Alexandria real estate joined the Archer collection in July 2024 and certainly lives up to the brand’s reputation for quality accommodations.

Conveniently located along King Street within walking distance of local boutiques and eateries, this refreshed property features a new independent eatery called HomeGrown that perfectly complements the already popular AKB bar, known for its shareable plates and curated cocktails.

The hotel’s 107 rooms, including 16 suites, strike a balance between upscale style and playful touches. Meeting spaces total over 5,600 sq ft, with ample natural light and the flexibility to host both professional and social gatherings, while private courtyards and terraces can be perfect for small receptions and functions. Situated along the Potomac River waterfront, Hotel Indigo Old Town Alexandria is a prime spot for its river views. It’s also just steps away from the bustling marina and within walking distance of attractions like Founders Park and superb waterfront restaurants like Ada’s on the River, a personal favorite.

Inside, the hotel incorporates design elements that reflect Alexandria’s colonial heritage, with subtle modern updates, while boutique-style guest rooms and communal areas emphasize a sense of place, linking the property to its storied surroundings.
