Virginia Beach has long been regarded as Virginia’s most popular coastal community. And for good reason. As the largest city in the state, it’s a major economic and cultural hub that combines urban sophistication with a healthy dose of seaside charm. Situated along the Atlantic coastline at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach boasts an enviable waterfront location that has made it a magnet for sun worshippers, surfers, and increasingly, those seeking a luxury beachside lifestyle.

Yet this bustling municipality offers so much more than just its famous Boardwalk and popular resort strip. Its dynamic economy, rich history, and abundant luxury real estate opportunities have given rise to a truly upscale living experience that draws discerning visitors and new residents alike.

The greatest luxury of all in Virginia Beach? Why, it’s the beach, of course!

In fact, it’s precisely this sense of elevated coastal living that makes Virginia Beach (“VB” to those in the know!) such an attractive destination for those seeking a taste of luxury. Whether your idea of indulgence involves luxurious waterfront estates with panoramic ocean views or simply savoring some of the region’s finest cuisine while overlooking the waves, Virginia Beach is a city that caters to everyone who enjoys a little refinement… whether occasionally, or 365 days a year.

Classy Travel & Luxury Living in Virginia Beach

What’s So Special About Virginia Beach?

Virginia Beach is located at the southeastern tip of the Commonwealth of Virginia and is a popular resort city. Covering a huge area of close to 500 square miles, it’s the largest city by area in the state and is governed by a council-manager system with a city council responsible for policy. A professional city manager oversees day-to-day operations, ensuring a structure that keeps local governance efficient and responsive to resident needs. With so solid and efficient a framework in place, Virginia Beach has consistently been recognized for its well-maintained public amenities, first-rate infrastructure, and a proactive approach to community development.

Located where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach certainly deserves its nickname of the “Resort City.” The city attracts over 19 million visitors each year, most here for its 35 miles of coastline, scenic waterfront parks, and an extensive network of trails and green spaces. Yet, beyond the shoreline, you’ll also find thriving commercial districts like the Town Center area in Pembroke, a major destination for luxury retail, dining, and entertainment.

Despite its popularity as a vacation hotspot, Virginia Beach is also much-loved by its year-round residents. From the historic neighborhoods of Pungo, famous for its farmland and festivals, to the eclectic and culturally rich Vibe Creative District closer to the oceanfront, every part of the city has its own distinct character. While the population of Virginia Beach hovers around 450,000, the greater metropolitan area that includes the nearby city of Norfolk and Chesapeake is home to roughly 1.7 million people, making this coastal region a major economic driver for the state.

For those aspiring to a luxury lifestyle, Virginia Beach provides the best of both worlds: a high-energy urban scene complete with upscale restaurants and boutiques, paired with the endless appeal of living in a spectacular coastal environment. Here, it’s possible to spend the morning walking the beach or kayaking its many inlets, then later in the day exploring high-end shopping destinations before wrapping the day up with a sumptuous meal at one of the city’s many exceptional seafood restaurants.

The Fun Stuff

One of VB’s most notable happenings is the Neptune Festival, a late-summer celebration that pays tribute to the beach lifestyle with art shows, wine tastings, sand sculpting competitions, and live concerts along the oceanfront. The FunkFest Beach Party is another highlight, bringing a soulful vibe to the Boardwalk each year with top funk, R&B, and soul performers. Foodies won’t want to miss the Coastal Virginia Wine Fest, usually held in winter, showcasing some of the region’s best vintages and epicurean delights.

History buffs will relish a visit to the Cape Henry Lighthouse, one of the oldest standing lighthouses in the United States commissioned by George Washington. Nearby, the Military Aviation Museum in Pungo offers a chance to see one of the world’s largest private collections of World War I and II aircraft, many of them still in flying condition.

A number of other cool attractions are located along the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, a wonderful three-mile stretch of paved paths for pedestrians and for cyclists. One of the best is the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum. Located in the historic DeWitt Cottage, it pays homage to the region’s coastal ecology and the artistic heritage of decoy carving.

Given its coastal setting, the city offers plenty of water-based activities. Surfing along the Atlantic coastline is a popular pastime, and Rudee Inlet is a local favorite for embarking on fishing excursions and boating adventures. Those who prefer calmer waters should explore Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, where kayaking and paddleboarding let you get up close to native birds and wildlife. For an even more exclusive twist, consider booking a private yacht charter for a sunset cruise, complete with champagne and hors d’oeuvres.

Arts and Culture in Virginia Beach

You’ll find the city’s artistic community centered around the ViBe Creative District. Packed with galleries, artisan shops, and colorful street murals, this area hosts regular art walks and pop-up markets, as inviting to locals as it is to visitors.

For fans of live performances, the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is a world-class venue that regularly features concerts, ballets, Broadway shows, and symphony performances year-round. The nearby Zeiders American Dream Theater (aka, The Z) is a more intimate space championing original works as well as open-mic nights and community-oriented events.

Movie lovers aren’t forgotten, either. The Beach Movie Alehouse stands out for its unique beer and movie concept, allowing patrons to enjoy a tasty pint alongside the latest box office hits. In the summertime, outdoor film screenings on the Boardwalk or at local parks offer a memorable movie experience.

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art(Virginia MOCA) presents a range of rotating exhibits featuring modern art from both local and international artists. The museum also hosts educational programs and workshops.

The VB Food & Drink Scene

Thanks to its coastal location, fresh seafood is a star attraction here. Some of the best is served up at Blue Seafood & Spirits, a tucked-away gem in the Red Mill area known for its crab cakes, seared scallops, and first-rate cocktails. For a more upscale experience, head to Terrapin Restaurant, situated near the Oceanfront and focusing on locally sourced ingredients and an ever-changing seasonal menu. Waterman’s Surfside Grille, a Boardwalk staple, is famed for its Orange Crush cocktail and ocean views.

Speaking of incredible views nowhere quite matches the stunning views to be enjoyed at Orion’s Roof Garden & Dining. Located atop the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, reserve a window seat or patio view over the Atlantic and the Boardwalk; you’ll find yourself so high-up that you really do feel as if you’re over the ocean. Under the talented watch of Chef Hisashi Araki, this plush restaurant’s Asian-fusion menu definitely matches the location in the “Wow!” department.

Globally inspired flavors can also be enjoyed at places like Pacifica, which melds Spanish tapas culture with the city’s maritime vibe, and Zushi Bistro, the place to go for (you guessed it) sushi.

The beverage scene here is also great. Top places to imbibe include the intimate Back Bay Brew House: Farmhouse, set in a historic farmhouse with a sprawling yard, to the chic ambience at The Atlantic on Pacific, which specializes in creative cocktails using local ingredients. The city also boasts a growing brewery trail featuring hotspots like Commonwealth Brewing Company, known for its rotating IPAs and imperial stouts, and Smartmouth Pilot House, which regularly experiments with funky small-batch brews.

For a truly memorable meal, consider a private chef’s table experience at places like Hearth Wood Fired Cuisine & Craft Beer, where you can watch your dishes prepared and cooked in a stone hearth oven. Food trucks are also a big part of the local culture and pop up in the ViBe Creative District on weekends, often with live music.

Where to Shop in Virginia Beach

Whether you’re on a quest for haute couture or seeking distinctive local art, the city’s retail landscape caters to diverse tastes and budgets, with plenty of luxury shopping options for those with the urge to splurge. Town Center of Virginia Beach is the beating heart of upscale shopping in VB. A trendy urban hub, it’s home to boutiques, national brands, and high-end fashion stores carrying designer labels.

For unique finds, the ViBe Creative District and the Oceanfront are home to several independent retailers offering handcrafted jewelry, locally made ceramics, and coastal-inspired home décor.

The Beachside Social market, for instance, hosts pop-up shops featuring local artists and artisans offering one-of-a-kind pieces. And if you’re seeking tasteful souvenirs or want to support local entrepreneurs, the weekly Old Beach Farmers Market features everything from organic produce to handcrafted goods.

Of course, no beach town would be complete without its share of surf shops, candy stores, and nautical-themed gift emporiums. The difference in Virginia Beach is the elevated twist on these classics. Shops like Coastal Edge Surf Shop blend surf culture with higher-end apparel lines, while oceanfront gift shops often stock artisanal chocolates and imported beachwear that go beyond typical tourist fare.

Where to Stay in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is certainly making a name for itself in the luxury travel market. Topping everyone’s list of posh places to stay in Virginia Beach (including mine), The Historic Cavalier Hotel & Beach Club, perched on a hill overlooking the ocean, is the pinnacle of luxury here. Opened in 1927 and meticulously restored in recent years, this elegant 4-star-but-feels-5-star historic property features lavish guest rooms, an on-site distillery producing award-winning bourbon, and an upscale spa that uses sea-inspired treatments.

Equally indulgent, the Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront, located right across the road and on the Boardwalk, boasts a rooftop infinity pool that offers jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic and is a prime pick if you want direct beach access and modern amenities. For something intimate, consider the Beach Spa Bed & Breakfast. Housed in a beautifully renovated historic property, each room is uniquely decorated with some featuring private hydrotherapy tubs that are ideal for couples seeking a romantic retreat. The Barclay Cottage Bed & Breakfast is another great option and is popular for its Victorian charm and friendly personalized service.

Many of the best are situated in exclusive neighborhoods like the North End or Croatan and come with private beach access, gourmet kitchens, and multi-car garages. If you’d prefer high-rise living, posh condos in the Town Center area provide sweeping city views and proximity to upscale dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Looking to truly push the boat out? Some resorts in Virginia Beach partner with local charter companies to arrange private yacht excursions, complete with sunset dinners or fishing adventures. VB’s Sport and Recreation Scene

Sports enthusiasts will find themselves right at home in Virginia Beach. While VB doesn’t have a major league team of its own, it’s part of the Hampton Roads region, which supports various minor league and semi-professional sports. You’ll find teams like Virginia Beach City FC soccer team competing in lower divisions but drawing a dedicated local fan base to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The Sportsplex itself is an impressive facility and also hosts lacrosse tournaments and rugby matches If you’re willing to venture just a bit west, you can catch the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park, a Triple-A baseball affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

Between its beaches and countless inlets, Virginia Beach is an ideal place for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The local surf scene is very active too, and the East Coast Surfing Championships, a 60-year-old annual tradition, continues to draw competitors from around the globe.

Landlubbers can head to Mount Trashmore Park, a reclaimed landfill that’s been transformed into a popular spot for jogging, skateboarding, and picnics. And if golf is your thing, top-tier courses like the Signature at West Neck, an Arnold Palmer-designed masterpiece praised for its challenging layout and scenic beauty.

For those who prefer indoor workouts, state-of-the-art recreation centers like the Princess Anne Recreation Center and the Bow Creek Recreation Center feature swimming pools, weight rooms, and fitness classes. Private fitness clubs and exclusive yoga studios also abound for preferring personalized, high-end experiences, while several spa retreats throughout the city integrate wellness offerings like massages and hydrotherapy and are great places to relax after a day on the water or the golf course.

For diehard fitness fiends, Virginia Beach is well-known for its marathon running scene. Leading the pack is the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon, one of the region’s largest and longest-running races.

Luxury Real Estate in Virginia Beach

When it comes to property options, Virginia Beach offers a dazzling array of residential styles and settings, from elegant beachfront condos overlooking the Atlantic to sprawling waterfront estates along the calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Luxury Virginia Beach real estate has become increasingly sought after in recent years, fueled by the city’s growing reputation as both a resort community and a full-service urban center. Whether you’re browsing a new waterfront development in Sandbridge or contemplating a penthouse suite in the bustling Town Center, you’ll find choices to fit various tastes and price points, all while delivering top-tier amenities.

Buyers looking for exclusive coastal living will likely gravitate toward neighborhoods like the North End, known for its quiet residential streets and direct access to the beach. Areas like Great Neck and Little Neck offer a blend of convenience and natural beauty, with homes ranging from modern custom builds to traditional brick estates set on large lots with dock access. If you have your heart set on oceanfront luxury, the oceanfront strip itself features a mix of high-rise condos and single-family homes, many with private beach access and panoramic views.

For those exploring the Virginia Beach real estate market, key factors to consider include proximity to the water, access to top-rated schools, and, of course, amenities. According to real estate market data from local agencies, VB consistently reports strong property values compared to other parts of the region, making it an attractive prospect for both long-term investors and families seeking a stable place to settle down.

Another aspect of Virginia Beach’s allure is its steady economic growth. Led by industries such as healthcare, education, and tourism, this stability fosters confidence among luxury buyers, knowing that the local market remains resilient. Many waterfront neighborhoods have seen property values appreciate steadily over the years, reflecting an ongoing demand for the coastal lifestyle. Ultimately, if you’re seeking a contemporary condo close to high-end shopping and dining or a tranquil retreat near the Bay, Virginia Beach offers a wealth of real estate opportunities that will fit the bill.

And Finally… The Serious Stuff

Virginia Beach also excels in the areas of education, healthcare, and essential services. Yes, dull subjects, but they’re pretty important considerations for those looking to put down roots here.

In terms of higher learning, Virginia Beach is part of the larger Hampton Roads region and is home to a number of respected institutions. Within the city itself, Tidewater Community College offers a variety of associate degrees and workforce development programs, while Regent University, a private Christian institution, offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in disciplines ranging from law to business administration. A short drive away in Norfolk, Old Dominion University provides a wider range of research opportunities and degree programs.

For families wanting a private education experience for their children, Virginia Beach hosts several prestigious options. Cape Henry Collegiate, for instance, is known for rigorous academics, strong athletics, and a variety of extracurricular programs. Catholic High School is another well-respected institution that combines faith-based learning with a reputable college preparatory curriculum.

On the healthcare front, Virginia Beach boasts multiple hospitals and medical centers. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is highly regarded for its cardiology and neurosurgery departments, while Sentara Princess Anne Hospital serves the southern part of the city with advanced medical services. The region also benefits from close proximity to other major healthcare networks in Norfolk and Chesapeake, ensuring specialized care is never far away.

VB has a good reputation for public safety, an area managed by a combination of city and county resources, all supported by a highly efficient council-manager form of government. The Virginia Beach Police Department has a reputation for community-oriented policing, while the city’s Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services maintain swift and reliable responses to both routine and urgent situations. From public libraries and community centers to a robust Parks & Recreation department, Virginia Beach invests in services that enhance the overall quality of life.
